Winter Seed Sowing

In order to wrap up project work we typically dormant seed mid-October through December. That said, sowing seeds now is a great option and becoming more popular. Remember that seeds continue to fall naturally at this time of year and go through a stratification period to break dormancy for germination with exposure to moisture and temperature fluctuations.

Assuming that your site is ready choose a day just before a snowfall or on top of light/fluffy snow. Do not seed on top of icy snow, deep snow (challenging to walk) or on a windy day. In the coming weeks the snow cover melting and early spring rains will assist in drilling the seed into the soil surface. Winter sowing may take place December through early-March. This is a great time to seed a new or overseed/enhance an established native seeding.#Natural Community Services #prairie restoration #native seed
